Montreal, Tuesday, June 4, 2013 — This year, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal highlights the exceptional contributions to music made by Charles Lloyd, Holly Cole, Alain Caron and Amadou & Mariam, as well as the remarkable oeuvre of Tommy LiPuma. During this 34th edition of the Festival, our winners will be presented, respectively, with the Miles Davis Award, Ella Fitzgerald Award, Oscar Peterson Award, Antonio Carlos Jobim Award and Bruce Lundvall Award.
2013 Ella Fitzgerald Award: Holly Cole
Holly Cole is the 15th recipient of the Ella Fitzgerald Award, established in 1999 for our 20th anniversary and conferred in recognition of the versatility, improvisational originality and quality of repertoire of a singer renowned on the international scene. A Nova Scotia native, this talented singer launched her career as a member of a number of Toronto groups. A passionate purveyor of jazz and pop, she is renowned for her interpretive talents―she has no equal when it comes to taking songs by artists as varied as Elvis Costello, Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Jacques Brel or even the Beatles and making them her own. Over the course of a prolific 30-year career, Holly Cole has cast her spell over the Festival audience many times. Back after her remarkable performance in Théâtre Maisonneuve two years ago, she presents her most recent album, Night. Holly Cole, June 27, 28 and 29, 8 p.m., at Théâtre du Nouveau Monde (Tout en voix series).
In accepting the prize, Holly Cole will be following previous Ella Fitzgerald prizewinners Liza Minnelli (2012), Sade (2011), The Manhattan Transfer (2010), John Pizzarelli (2009), Aretha Franklin (2008), Harry Connick, Jr., (2007), Etta James (2006), Al Jarreau (2005) Tony Bennett (2004), Bobby McFerrin (2003), Dianne Reeves (2002), Diana Krall (2001), Dee Dee Bridgewater (2000) and Diane Schuur (1999).

Holly Cole est la 15e lauréate du Prix Ella-Fitzgerald. À l’occasion de son 20e anniversaire, en 1999, le Festival a eu l’idée de créer ce prix pour récompenser une chanteuse ou un chanteur de jazz au talent remarquable qui a eu un impact et une influence majeurs sur la scène internationale.
Originaire de Nouvelle-Écosse, la talentueuse chanteuse entreprend sa carrière au sein de divers groupes torontois. Férue de jazz et de pop, elle se distingue par ses talents d’interprète ― elle n’a pas son pareil pour faire siennes les pièces d’artistes aussi variés qu’Elvis Costello, Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Jacques Brel ou les Beatles. Au fil d’une prolifique carrière lancée il y a quelque 30 ans, Holly Cole est venue séduire le public du Festival à maintes reprises. De retour après son tour de chant au Théâtre Maisonneuve il y a deux ans, elle nous présente son plus récent album, Night. Holly Cole, les 27, 28 et 29 juin à 20 h au Théâtre du Nouveau Monde (série Tout en voix).
