Canadian vocalist, Holly Cole, is one of greatest song interpreters alive.

She can take a song you think you know and bring something out of it that you’ve never heard before.

For example, her latest CD, Night, contains Holly’s inventive re-imagining of a James Bond theme (You Only Live Twice), as well as songs by Danny O’Keefe, Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart, Rod McKuen and Gordon Lightfoot.

In this wonderful studio session with KPLU’s Abe Beeson, Holly treats us to three songs from the new CD, including one of her own compositions, You’ve Got A Secret.

Holly’s band includes Aaron Davis (piano), George Koeller (bass), Davide DiRenzo (drums) and John Johnson (horns).

EDMONTON – Ever since her 1990 full-length recording debut, the record hit Girl Talk, singer Holly Cole has shown a special talent for plumbing the campy, dated or sexist sentiments of yesterday’s pop hits with a jazzy, satirical twist.

It’s all in the subtext, says the Toronto-based chanteuse, a two-time Juno jazz award winner. Check the fresh angle on The Flamingos’ 1959 hit I Only Have Eyes For You from Cole’s new CD Night, her 10th studio album.

“That song has great potential for subtext, which is kind of my best friend,” Cole allowed in a recent conversation.

“It’s fun to challenge pre-conceived ideas about well-known songs and to inject an element of mystery too. What is implied in the subtext is often more interesting than what’s said literally in the lyrics. If I’m doing my job right, the audience is intrigued enough by what the song means to me that they will figure out what it means to them.”

Wow, what a great bunch of gigs in B.C. We played a great gig at The River Rock in Richmond & then we went on to Vancouver Island. The last night we played in Courtenay with a big choir of high school kids – The Harmonic Minors and their Choirmaster Jen Forsland. They sounded beautiful and it was fun beyond belief!
I think they craved their first gig ever.
